Maintainance & Repair Services
The Repair and Maintenance sector comprises establishments primarily engaged in restoring machinery, equipment, and other products to proper working condition. In addition to corrective repair, these establishments typically provide routine or preventive maintenance services to ensure that products operate efficiently and to minimize the risk of breakdowns and avoidable repairs.
Within this sector, industries are organized into subsectors based on production processes—that is, on the specific type of repair and maintenance activity performed, together with the distinct skills, expertise, and technical procedures required. This classification is not based on customer type: it does not distinguish between services provided to businesses and those provided to households. While certain industries predominantly serve one customer group, many repair and maintenance establishments serve both markets; computer and consumer electronics repair services are common examples of such overlap.
It is important to note that not all repair and maintenance activities are classified within this sector. A significant amount of repair work is carried out by establishments whose primary activity is the manufacture of machinery, equipment, or other goods; these are classified under the various sectors within Manufacturing. Similarly, repair of transportation equipment is often performed by, or located at, transportation facilities such as airports and seaports; these activities fall under the Transportation and Warehousing sector.
A special case arises with the repair of buildings and structures. Activities such as plumbing, electrical installation and repair, painting, decorating, and other construction-related services are frequently involved both in new construction and in the repair or renovation of existing structures. Because it is difficult to draw a clear line between installation in new works and repair of existing ones, all such establishments are classified within the Construction sector, even when a substantial share of their work is repair and maintenance.
